Analysis Description
Lipid profile is used to diagnose lipid metabolism disorders and assess the risk of atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and other vascular complications. Changes in the lipidogram often develop asymptomatically, but can contribute to the formation of vascular plaques for a long time. Regular monitoring of indicators is especially important in the presence of risk factors: overweight, sedentary lifestyle, arterial hypertension, diabetes, smoking or hereditary predisposition. This check-up includes key laboratory parameters used for both initial assessment and monitoring of therapy effectiveness.

The lab diagnostics detect
Screening for lipid metabolism disorders
Cardiovascular disease risk assessment
Control of hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease
Selection and evaluation of the effectiveness of lipid-lowering therapy
Examination of patients with obesity, diabetes, hypertension
Indications
Age over 40 years (preventive screening)
Overweight, obesity
Arterial hypertension
Diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome
Hereditary predisposition to cardiovascular diseases
Disorders of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism
Monitoring of lipid-lowering drug therapy
Preparation for surgical treatment
Analysis Composition and Interpretation
Total Cholesterol
Reflects the total concentration of cholesterol in all lipoprotein fractions. It is used as a basic indicator for assessing lipid status.

Normal range: <5.2 mmol/l

Reasons for increased values: hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, cholesterolosis, liver pathologies, familial hypercholesterolemia
Reasons for decreased values: hyperthyroidism, acute infections, malabsorption, nutritional deficiencies

Triglycerides
The main form of fat in the body. Synthesized in the liver and ingested with food. They are a marker of metabolic disorders, especially in combination with excess body weight.

Normal range: <1.7 mmol/l

Reasons for increased values: diabetes mellitus, obesity, alcoholic liver disease, hypothyroidism
Reasons for decreased values: low-fat diet, hyperthyroidism, malabsorption

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL)
Cholesterol fraction has antiatherogenic properties. Promotes removal of excess cholesterol from tissues and vascular walls. Transports it to the liver for excretion.

Normal range:
  • Men: >1.0 mmol/l
  • Women: >1.2 mmol/l

Reasons for increased values: smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, insulin resistance
Reasons for decreased values: low risk of cardiovascular diseases

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL)
The main fraction of lipoproteins that transports cholesterol from the liver to peripheral tissues. At elevated levels, this fraction accumulates cholesterol in the walls of blood vessels. This increases the risk of atherosclerotic plaque formation and the development of cardiovascular diseases.

Normal range: <3.0 mmol/l

Reasons for increased values: atherosclerosis, familial hypercholesterolemia, nephrotic syndrome
Reasons for decreased values: hyperthyroidism, chronic infections, nutritional deficiencies

Very Low Density Lipoproteins (VLDL)
Participates in the transport of triglycerides from the liver to tissues. An increase in their level indicates severe lipid metabolism disorders and is often accompanied by metabolic syndrome.

Normal range: 0.13–1.0 mmol/l

Reasons for increased values: obesity, type 2 diabetes, hyperinsulinemia
Reasons for decreased values: no clinical significance in normal triglyceride levels

Atherogenicity index (Cholesterol/HDL Ratio)
An indicator of the balance between "bad" and "good" cholesterol. Used to more accurately assess the risk of developing atherosclerosis.

Normal range: <4.5

Reasons for increased values: increased risk of atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, stroke
Reasons for decreased values: favorable prognosis for cardiovascular diseases
