Removal of Intrauterine Device (IUD)
Procedure Description

Removal of the intrauterine device is carried out by a gynecologist in an outpatient setting, quickly and safely. The procedure is recommended after the IUD’s expiration date, pregnancy planning, or if side effects occur. A new IUD can be inserted during the same visit.

Removal of the IUD is a quick and safe procedure that does not require hospitalization and allows for immediate transition to pregnancy planning or a change in contraception method.

How the Procedure Goes

IUD removal is a standard gynecological procedure performed in an outpatient setting without the need for hospitalization. The intrauterine device is removed through the cervical canal using special sterile forceps that grasp the threads of the device extending from the cervical canal.

It is important that the procedure is performed by a doctor, ensuring all hygienic and antiseptic standards are followed.

The manipulation takes only a few minutes and is usually well tolerated. In rare cases, if the threads are not visible or the IUD has shifted, removal may require dilation of the cervical canal or ultrasound guidance.

The procedure can be carried out

  • After the IUD’s expiration date
  • At the patient’s request
  • When planning pregnancy
  • If side effects, inflammation, or pain occur

Benefits of the Procedure

  • Quick and safe
  • Does not require anesthesia (in most cases)
  • Allows for immediate transition to pregnancy planning or a new contraception method
  • Doctor’s control eliminates risks of complications

Preparation

Usually, no special preparation is required, but it is recommended to:

  • Undergo an examination by a gynecologist
  • Take smears for flora (if indicated)
  • Perform a pelvic ultrasound to check the position of the IUD.

The optimal time for removal is during the first days of the menstrual cycle when the cervix is slightly open, making the procedure more comfortable. However, removal can be performed on any day if necessary.

After the Procedure

IUD removal does not require long recovery. Possible symptoms include:

  • Short-term pulling pain in the lower abdomen
  • Mild spotting

Doctor’s Recommendations

  • Refrain from sexual activity for 2–3 days
  • Maintain hygiene
  • Monitor your condition

If a new IUD is planned for insertion, the doctor can perform this during the same visit (with agreement and in the absence of contraindications).
